we will live, we will dream on the shadow of our world.

The sand was crushed beneath him. He felt as he stepped upon the shore, as he shed the seawater that had threatened to consume him, a thrill like no other.

And there, before him, Virsisé saw the depths of the islands. Eshteth. Like lanterns, thoughts flickered to life- they sparked and burned within him. What had merely been a question before began to gain the whispers of an answer. But it did not comfort him. In his heart, Virsisé did not feel contentment but unease. He felt the frigid touch of fear; so much depended upon these steps, carrying him inwards, onward. But as he thought of dreams and portents, of the words that led him here, of the dreams that did not- and how he wished they had -he found himself gazing deeper into the land before him. How lush and fertile and yet, as he was no fool, he was certain this was no paradise. How dull his home was in comparison, how empty of both light and dark. Everything that had fulfilled him had become hollow but here, he felt as though he was being born anew.

But that was foolish. He had only just crossed the boundary into the unknown and yet insisted as if he knew this place intimately. But the thoughts continued, blooming with ideas, and the ever frustrating craving for the guidance of a vision- a true vision. Would it come to him now? Would it only lead to his failure or his gain? How he wondered. Still, for all those questions, even if he had a hint of an answer- of what was to come -he had nothing set in stone. He could only hope that the word of Essence had not led him astray, as so many of his dreams had.

Virsisé strode onward, water clinging to his body, making the chain around his neck shine. He felt as though there were thousands, millions of eyes resting upon him. But that was a familiar sensation; he had always been one under the gaze of others, whether in harsh judgement or approval. But who would look at him now? And in what manner? They knew nothing of his past, his childish fancies- if he could but remain calm, there was no doubt he would be welcome. And in that, there would be much for him to learn. Yet anger was always there, a dark cloud surrounding him like smoke. It whispered as strongly as all his other desires.

Isn't this all foolish? For naught? Curse them, damn them, crush everything that stood in his way- destroy not just others but himself, for all his fallacy in believing. It raged in him like fire.

No, that was enough.

For now, at least. Virsisé inhaled deeply, tasting the salty air. But not only did he relish the scent of the sea, he could detect the scents of the forest- of trees and flowers, of rotting undergrowth, and the animals whose paths crossed his own. He lifted his head, letting his eyes cross the sky. As much as he avoided thinking of it, his body was exhausted- he was resting as a mortal body had no recourse but to do. But, it gave him time to think. To ponder. To listen.

Was it someone approaching, or was it his imagination running away as it always did?

Ah, fear. The unfortunate symptom of being a creature born to be preyed upon by others- for all the knowledge, the cultured society that graced his kind, there was no forgetting it.

A lupine shape, if not warranting outright fear, was enough to bring forth caution. To think this was a harmless whelp, so easily crushed beneath an obsidian hoof, was foolish. But in the same breath, Virsisé was curious. This was not a mangy beast, for all he could smell the sharp tang of blood. They were not hollow eyes that gazed at him, unworthy of the grace of a word, but something that almost mirrored his own. It was obvious to him then. This must be another, not of his species, that had been called by Essence. That was what he believed with utmost surety.

Fear fled him. It was not comfort he felt but confidence; he may be weary but his strength returned with every breath, and regardless of that, this was a meeting that could provide a wealth of knowledge. He would not let such a base instinct as fear ruin him and take this chance from his grasp. No. For all his uncertainty, trivial and not, he was not a fool. Never that. And to think this was far too dangerous to use, to harness, in his journey was something which could only be called foolish.

Virsisé lowered his head. Vermilion eyes no longer searched the sky, but instead lit upon those not unlike his own- not only in breadth of emotion, but in hue. He moved himself so that he could easily keep the sleek, pale shape in view. What a curious feeling it was that enveloped him. So similar to what rushed through him upon stepping on the island; it was like lightning, sharp and erratic, but all the more tantalizing for it's inherit danger. A word graced his hearing. It was one he did not know, and what excitement that brought. The meaning was unnecessary, regardless of curiosity; that voice, that whisper, held far more in intonation than it could in meaning.

"Hark, what frail voice calls?" The voice that emerged was deep, calm radiating despite the weakness conjured at first sight. A moment of silence persisted, thoughtfully, before he spoke once more. "Well met, pale one.

What brings one forth on such an auspicious occasion?"

As he breathed, the weight of his necklace seemed to warm him from within. Which way would this path carry him?

How he longed for dreams.

He would falter no more than he had, so he decided, and in Virsisé's heart and soul that was more than enough to steel him against the blood and viscera that clung to that otherwise pristine form. Delicate but as delicate things could be, there was fierceness beneath. In a place in which he believed instinct aught not be at the forefront, it could be respected. His kin would find him truly repulsive in that.

But the past was immaterial, and he thrust himself once more into present mind and body. Into an encounter he had not foresaw, and how that continued to gnaw at him in his depths. But the turmoil was invisible, for now at least. He gazed down at the comparatively small form as a voice emerged, now speaking in tongue that he could comprehend. How fortuitous. Virsisé continued to observe her, those movements and proximity; caution, yes. No matter his certainty, he would retain that. He snorted as her saccharine voice emerged, voicing a question he would not ignore. But these were the games they would play; Virsisé would respect her inquiry but knew, then, she would still decide to avoid him if she wished.

"You may call me Virsisé, he replied in even tones, in such a way that said he was not placated by that voice. Virsisé was well-versed in the placating manners of those seeking favor and the like. How familiar, disturbingly familiar, from this bloodened canine. But he had humored those he once knew, seeking adoration and praise, but he did not desire it from her. Was she really so alike those he had abandoned? It was a disturbing thought.

"And so you shall answer. Or no?" Vocals became undertoned with amusement, knowing and keen, though his eyes remained somber. "Though you may not wish, I will return such favor- or are we merely alike in our purpose here? Ah, it would please me if it were so.

Such fortune it brings, the word of Essence, that I might find the answers I seek."

And of that, he would say no more.

SEND YOUR DREAMS
WHERE NOBODY HIDES
H
is gaze pondered upon her and every motion that graced her body, his instinctive nature warring with curiosity, the thrill of who he spoke to. Was he a child, tasting the forbidden? The waves crashed behind him and warned him of the truth. But this was another world, another dawn, and he faced a predator with pride rather than fear.

Virsisé was still and silent as he waited for her response, patient as he may, for he could not lapse in his control at such a crucial point. But he was calm, and he sank into the sound of the sea, of the wind, as he sought out her eyes. Her flattery pleased him even as he disapproved. His perception of truth wavered, and he wondered at the validity of her actions. Was her display of respect honest and forward, or did she seek to take him unawares? The mutterings were roused in his mind but he quelled them, inhaling deeply of the air. He had been guided here, whether or not it had been through the guise of dreams, and he refused to believe he would be led astray so soon. He had crossed the waters. He had followed the voice. So close, so close now, a near frantic need to leave this pale creature behind burned within him. But Virsisé did not move. Not yet.

She spoke in obvious manner, of the blood that coated her form, and he disregarded those words. They were unnecessary, and he had no fitting response, no more than distaste at that casual remark. A cruel reminder that he spoke now to a wolf, just as much as the lingering sight and scent- worse even that she acknowledged it by voice, as though flaunting it. But those words were ultimately unimportant. They were an obvious truth, and he sought more. It came to him with an affirmation and he nodded, a sense of joy leaping in his breast.

"Would you not say this is fortuitous, Knurlnien?" Virsisé spoke her name gently, tasting unfamiliar sounds. The Heart of Stone, such a name- a title, perhaps -he mulled over. "Knowledge and Essence, may they be one in the same. I seek knowledge. I seek a cure. May we both be graced with what we desire."

He bowed his head to her, then.

"A new beginning is here, before us," he murmured in hushed tones, as if to himself. "I am glad to have met you, Knurlnien. I pray this bodes well for what awaits yonder."

Pray, he said, as though he truly expected the gods to answer. The gods would offer nothing, yet still he clung to his office. It was not escaped so easily, not as easily as kith or kin, nor as the home his hooves once trod upon. If Essence was a deity, than it could offer the truth. A truth after the sea of lies his gods and family had given him, his myths and fables. A god that he could finally speak to. A god he could acknowledge.

He raised his head, gazing deeply into the distant trees, the burgeoning darkness.

"Lies are tiresome, they are cold and hateful. Lies can unmake you. Do you not agree?" Unexpected, the words arose from his mouth. How forward, how unnecessary, of him to ask. Her answer in that regard did not truly matter. Yet, he was curious.
