How far had he come?

Such questions were meaningless drivel, imposed upon him by a mind ever seeking answers, regardless of the consequences. Questions begat answers, after all- there was no question that could not claim one. But that did not mean it would grace him with wisdom and light, guiding him onwards to glory. The threat of failure loomed there, like a beast enveloped in shadow, testing him. Virsisé's heart burned and he rose with purpose upon forbidden sands, the ocean whispering behind him, washing upon that thin path that was the sole bridge to the inner island. How far had he come? It did not matter. He was here. Essence, Essence. Prophecy was unneeded, though he demanded it, now more than ever. Demanded such tempestuous visions, a clash of victory and defeat. Where did his steps lead, in the absence of true divination? It was here, here, with or without the pull of a dream. If such a God did exist- in mockery of everything he had known, worshiped, been chosen by -it would surely bring the answers he sought. It must.

Or else all would be for naught, and he believed he would let the sea claim him- willingly, desperately -for he had given, had sacrificed, everything.

Was it worth it? Surely he would not live and die by the grace of a god, existing or not. His pride would not, or so he could claim, allow such a fate. But his own existence hinged upon this moment. For whatever reason, Virsisé could not deny it.

"Essence," he whispered as he climbed further. The temple was there; he could see it. It rung with the divine, a hollow bell, drawing every fibre of his being. And how he despised it, how he longed for it. His eyes, embued with blood, could only look forward. The wind tossed his mane, caressed his body; he felt more alive, and yet more doomed, than ever before. He walked forward, his hooves treading upon sacred ground, casting ancient shadows upon him. The trees closed in about him and then, finally, began to part. He left the scent of earth and leaves, lush hues of life painted upon decadent background. Life bloomed. Life thrived. Fire rose like a crescendo within him.

Answers. Grant him answers. Grant him purpose, purpose that had been gifted and then taken from him. Give them back, allow him to take what was rightfully his-

The future.

"I am here," Virsisé spoke into the silence that fell upon him like a veil of night. Yet it was not the stars that danced above but the sun, heralding his arrival. "Do you not answer?

Bring to him life or death.

i am that i am
that which was, and that which will always be

We do not slumber but instead lie with dormant attentiveness eyes aglow, always watching for our children. We reap the fruits borne of the tree so lovingly planted, espying exploits both beautiful and some, foretold to be disastrous glistening in springtime dew to bless - or curse - our chosen few.

We see him long before he dares climb the steps to our home.

O' questions, questions borne from the lips of the judicious desiring plausible articulation to hurl the gates of knowledge wide open, to provide a path to understanding.

We understand his motive.

Insufferable hunger to know, and yet, arrogant enough to doubt our presence. "We hear your words." Articulation burst forth in rumbling chorus of voices resembling not man, nor woman. Deafening reverberation against the walls of our abode. "And your thoughts." A tempestuous demand pulsating off of his physique like a pungent scent that seared our nostrils and watered our eyes.

We appear as a figure; sturdy and luminous cast in the mould of equine terra cotta fluid and glistening in regal allure. But we do not approach, our ears stand erect and eyes glitter with unsurmountable knowledge to pass down to our visitor, and we wait.

These are sacred words we bring you.
As well as sacred thoughts.

It was a shiver that passed through him, a tremble that echoed in his bones. A feeling he could not describe nestled in his breast, and he felt a child once more. A fragile, tempestuous child- one charmed by the world as much as he denied it, denied it's ownership of him. Yet still capable of being entranced with the thought of something more, something greater, so long as it came from himself and not the pompous words of his elders.

How far he had climbed and then fallen? What vision was it that brought him greatness, love and devotion? In the presence of a God, of something truly beyond, he had forgotten.

Virsisé steeled himself. The voices reverberated in his ears, their shadows lingering, unforgotten. If not for his arrogance he might have fled, but no, this was what he had come for. And it was not false- not so much as he could see. The statuesque figure of the equine was like that of a ghost, ephemeral yet eternal. Yes, he was entranced, and how he wished to laugh at his thought of flinging himself into the sea, the deep and dark that would have claimed him if not for this.

Overdramatic, reckless, and childish. He was aware. But it was not anger which broiled within him, at himself or others. For once all his efforts had not come to naught. What a heady sensation it was, powerful enough to draw him forward. He was not afraid. Virsisé stepped forwards, upwards, ascending to the waiting being.

"Then you know why I have come." Were these truly the words that passed from his lips? But if his thoughts were known, he had no reason to pretend. No reason to falsify his serenity, his righteous calm, like the eye of a storm. He had questions, and he demanded answers.

It was in the right of Essence to deny him, this he knew. It would not stop him, not seal his lips, not extinguish the light that burned in him. The flickering light which sought to answer the secret of his dreams.

"Cast in the shadows of lies, I believed myself to understand the wills of the Gods. I believed- nay, knew my purpose was to lead others to the path of righteousness," he spoke, his voice strained with emotion, even as he climbed upwards. He could no longer contain himself, a disgraceful display in the sight of what he saw as a higher being. "But now the sun has revealed to me otherwise. Will you rebuke me? I, Virsisé, ask."

i am that i am

Silence dominated the space that surrounded us as we regarded the forthright being that loomed upon us. His words we acknowledge with a smile of amusement that pulled at the edges of our lips; a single laughing breath escaping our nostrils. Of course we knew. It was our sole purpose to determine the purpose and imminence of those within our grasp, a clairvoyant above all clairvoyants. We... We set these beings down the aisle of greatness and destruction, but it was up to these creatures of actuality, to be sentient and impartial in their choices upon this passage, for only would the outcome be determined with surety.

It is in our interest to remain silent, infinite gaze upon the dashing physique of the stallion with little more than a hinted interest in his soliloquy. He spoke formally; and we listened with little reason to undermine such contemplation. Each opinion was fuelled with reason; this one was fed with experience we dared not allow him to relive.

O', he would live. Indeed he would.

"We cannot fault you, Virsisé."

Our voice fills the room in a booming chorus as hooves tread the floor towards him; we approach to halt but a hair's breadth away from his own façade. Here we stand, silent, observing. "Your purpose is far greater than leading mortals towards a passage of righteousness." The reverberating thrum of both masculine and feminine articulation is intimidating, scantly cold, but boasting a tone of care, like a mother offering guidance.

"You fail to see that your true potential can so easily be unlocked. Do not look to those who need your guidance only. Look harder, and see that finding righteousness is no means to an end, it merely opens a door to far greater beginnings."

These are sacred words we bring you.
As well as sacred thoughts.
